Position Description and Expectations

Patrol play a crucial role in our community by taking the pulse of our campus on a daily basis. As part of a peer support group, you must get to know residence students and to encourage them to uphold our residence policies and guidelines. You are to be an example of proper conduct for all students of the University and are expected to conduct yourself in a professional manner. Patrol workers are members of the King’s residence staff, reporting to the Patrol Supervisors and to the Assistant Dean of Students.

Specifically, Student Patrol members are expected to:

  • Work in a professional capacity with the Dean, Assistant Dean, dons, front desk workers, security, and facilities management staff.
  • Know and encourage fellow students to uphold the Residence Guidelines and show a general respect for campus life. If you are unclear about a policy, please speak with a Supervisor or the Assistant Dean.
  • Conduct hourly rounds of the residence, as set forth in the shift check-list, reporting any anomalies or problems in the Patrol Log.
  • Ensure Incident Reports are filled out appropriately and submitted at the end of every shift.
  • Maintain team and student confidentiality.
  • Seek assistance and accept direction from the Duty Dons on shift, when necessary.
  • Accept scheduling and direction as given by Patrol Supervisors.
  • Ensure coverage of assigned shifts. If you are unable to cover an assigned shift you must find a replacement worker, and failing that, notify the Patrol Supervisors.
  • Conduct minor facilities maintenance if necessary or as directed. (e.g. sweeping or shovelling)
  • Maintain communication with Patrol Supervisors, and promptly inform them of any personnel problems.
  • Attend Patrol staff meetings (once per term and/or as required).
  • Check your email account daily to be informed of all Patrol updates.
  • Patrol members who show up to work intoxicated or under the influence of drugs will be immediately dismissed.
  • Patrol members who show up late, or miss three shifts or meetings will be suspended or dismissed.
  • Read the Patrol Manual in its entirety and attend a mandatory, three-day paid training period, from Wednesday, August 30th to Friday, September 1st 2017.
  • New patrollers must work 3 “shadows shifts” with returners prior to assuming their own shift.
  • Work additional shifts during Fall Orientation Week.

Patrol Wage (subject to budgetary approval):

Early evening shift (8 p.m. to 12 mid): $11.40 per hour · Late night shift (12 mid to 8 a.m.): $12.75 per hour. Workers will regularly work approximately 4 to 8 hours per week, depending upon the availability of shifts. Additional shifts may also come available. A maximum of 16 hours per week is permitted, on occasion.
